GTA 6 Is Reportedly 210GB on PS5: How to Free Up and Expand Storage Before Launch

GTA 6 is reportedly 210GB on PS5. Check free space per model, move games to USB, add a PCIe Gen4 M.2 SSD, and pre-load on Nov 12 for the Nov 19 launch.

TL;DR: GTA 6 is reportedly a 210GB download on PS5. That number comes from the PlayStation Store database tracker PlayStation Game Size (posted 27 October 2026) and was corroborated by Insider Gaming, then picked up by VideoCardz. Rockstar and Sony have not published an official file size, so treat 210GB as reported, not confirmed. What is official: GTA 6 launches 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and digital pre-orders can pre-load from 12 November 2026 (Take-Two press release). Target at least 250GB free on your internal SSD or an M.2 SSD before 12 November. GTA 6 can't be played from a USB drive.

VideoCardz notes that the figure reflects the current build and could change with updates. Engadget points out it's not yet clear whether 210GB is just the download or the full space needed to install. Installs can briefly need extra working room. That's why this guide aims for 250GB free, not 210GB.

Step 1: Check which PS5 you have and how much space is free

  1. Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage. The bar shows used and free space.
  2. Select Games and Apps to sort installed titles by size. This is your deletion list.
  3. To find your model number, look at the sticker on the back or bottom of the console (it starts with CFI-), or open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.

PS5 models don't all have the same usable space, because part of the SSD is reserved for system software. These are approximate figures as reported by reviewers and Sony's own store listings:

PS5 modelAdvertised SSDUsable space (approx.)Left after a 210GB GTA 6GTA 6 share of usable space
Launch PS5, disc or digital (CFI-1000/1100/1200)825GB~667GB~457GB~31%

Sources: launch PS5 ~667GB and Slim 848GB shown / ~842GB after deleting the preinstalled Astro's Playroom (Digital Trends); PS5 Pro ~1.88TB usable (Numerama); the 825GB CFI-2100 Slim Digital (PlayStation Direct listing, Tom's Hardware). Sony says available capacity varies with system software version, so check your own console's number.

Rule of thumb: If Console Storage shows less than 250GB free, keep going with Step 2.

Step 2: Free up space on the internal SSD

Work from fastest to slowest:

  1. Delete what you've finished. In Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, tick the biggest titles you aren't playing and select Delete. Your save data is kept separately in console storage (and in cloud storage if you have PS Plus), so deleting a game doesn't delete your progress. Check the save is there before you delete anything you care about.
  2. Delete game modes you don't use. Many big games, including Call of Duty, split campaign, multiplayer and extra packs into separate add-ons. Open the game's ... menu > Manage Game Content and remove the parts you don't play.
  3. Clear the Media Gallery. Captures pile up quickly, especially 4K video. Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Media Gallery and delete or move them.
  4. Remove leftover data. In Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Saved Data, delete saves for games you'll never reinstall. Check Other too, though you can't clear much of it by hand.
  5. Disc owners: a disc only skips part of the download. The data still has to be installed on the SSD, so a disc doesn't save you any space.

Step 3: Move games to a USB drive instead of deleting them

If you have a spare external drive, park old games on it instead of downloading them again later.

Requirements (PlayStation support):

  • SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or faster
  • 250GB minimum, 8TB maximum
  • Plugged directly into the console, not through a USB hub. Only one extended storage drive can be active at a time.

Steps:

  1. Connect the drive to a SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps port (Type-A or Type-C) on the PS5.
  2. Go to Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Format as USB Extended Storage. This erases everything on the drive.
  3. Go to Game Library, highlight a game, press Options, choose Move Games and Apps, tick the games you want to move and select Move.
  4. Optional: set Settings > Storage > Installation Location so PS4 games install to USB by default.

The catch: PS5 games can't be played from USB extended storage. You have to copy them back to the internal SSD or an M.2 SSD first. PS4 games run straight from USB. So USB is good for storing your old games but can't hold GTA 6 while you play it.

Step 4: Add an M.2 NVMe SSD (the real fix)

An M.2 SSD is the only way to add space you can play PS5 games from, GTA 6 included. Sony says the PS5 can download, update and launch PS5 games from M.2 storage (PlayStation support).

What to buy

Spec Sony requirement
Interface PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD (M key). M.2 SATA is not supported
Capacity 250GB to 8TB
Form factor 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, 22110
Size with cooling Up to 25mm wide, up to 11.25mm thick (max 8.0mm above the board, 2.45mm below)
Sequential read 5,500MB/s or faster recommended
Cooling Required: heatsink or heat transfer sheet, either built in or added by you

Practical picks:

  • Size: At a reported 210GB for GTA 6, a 1TB drive holds GTA 6 plus two or three other big games. 2TB is the comfortable choice for a launch PS5 or an 825GB Slim Digital.
  • Heatsink: Buy a drive with a built-in low-profile heatsink made for PS5, or add a single-sided heatsink yourself. Don't stack a second heatsink on a drive that already has one. Sony advises against that.
  • Skip drives that rely on Host Memory Buffer (HMB). The PS5 doesn't support HMB, so they can run slower than expected.

How to install it

You need a #1 Phillips screwdriver, a table and about 15 minutes. Turn the console off fully (not Rest Mode), unplug everything, let it cool, and touch something grounded and metal to discharge static first.

PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro (CFI-2000/7000 model groups):

  1. Remove the triangle cover (the small panel near the expansion slot).
  2. Remove the screw from the expansion slot cover and lift the cover off.
  3. Remove the screw and spacer, then move the spacer to the hole that matches your drive length (2280 for most drives).
  4. Insert the SSD at an angle, lined up with the notch, all the way into the connector.
  5. Press it down flat and fasten it with the screw.
  6. Put the slot cover and triangle cover back on.
  7. Power on. The PS5 shows a formatting guide. Format the drive (this erases it).

Launch PS5 (CFI-1000 model group):

  1. Remove the stand, lay the console PlayStation-logo-down with the power button facing you.
  2. Grip the top-left corner of the white cover, pull it slightly up and to the right, and slide it off.
  3. Remove the screw on the long rectangular expansion slot cover and take the cover off.
  4. Remove screw (B), move the spacer (C) to your drive's length.
  5. Insert the SSD at an angle until it's fully seated, then press it down and screw it in. The board must sit flat on the spacer.
  6. Replace the slot cover. If it won't close, your heatsink is too tall.
  7. Slide the side panel back on until it clicks, reconnect everything, power on and format.

After installing

  1. Set downloads to go to the new drive: Settings > Storage > Installation Location > PS5 games: M.2 SSD Storage.
  2. Or move existing games over: Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps > Movable to M.2 SSD Storage tab.
  3. Keep GTA 6 on whichever drive has the room. Sony notes not every game performs exactly the same from M.2 as from the internal drive. If GTA 6 stutters on the M.2 drive, move it to the internal SSD and put other games on the M.2.

A whole game must sit on one drive. The PS5 can't split one title between the internal SSD and the M.2.

Step 5: Set up the pre-load for 12 November

  1. Pre-order digitally on the PlayStation Store, or buy the boxed edition (which has a code inside) from 12 November and redeem the code under PlayStation Store > ... > Redeem Code.
  2. Turn on Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates > Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
  3. Turn on Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Stay Connected to the Internet.
  4. Leave the PS5 in Rest Mode on the night of 11 to 12 November. The pre-load opens on 12 November, a week before launch (Take-Two).
  5. On launch day, leave a buffer for a possible day-one patch. Its size hasn't been announced.

Quick checklist

  • 250GB+ free on internal SSD or M.2 by 12 November 2026
  • Finished games moved to USB extended storage (PS5 games must be copied back to play)
  • M.2 SSD is PCIe Gen4 NVMe, 5,500MB/s+, with a heatsink, formatted on the console
  • Installation Location set to the drive with room
  • Auto-Download and Stay Connected to the Internet enabled for the pre-load
  • Launch: 19 November 2026

Caution: the 210GB figure is unofficial and could change, so leave more room than that.
