Apple Admits iPhone Duo Inner-Screen Defect: What the "Free Replacement" Actually Covers (2026)

Apple confirmed an inner-display issue on some iPhone Duo units and says to contact AppleCare for a replacement. Symptoms, how to get one, Korea warranty and repair costs, the ITSub row, and what Apple hasn't said.

TL;DR — Apple has confirmed that some iPhone Duo units have a problem with the inner display. Affected owners are told to contact AppleCare for a replacement. Korean headlines on October 27, 2026 call this a "free replacement of all affected units," but Apple's actual statement is shorter. It admits an issue on "a small number" of units and gives no cause, failure rate, serial range or deadline. As of today there is no formal repair program page on Apple's support site. If your inner screen cracks or shows a bright line along the hinge, contact Apple now rather than waiting for a formal program. Replacement stock is tight.

What Apple actually said

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable. According to MoneyToday and Aju News, it went on sale on October 23, 2026. Within days, owners began posting about damage to the inner screen. On October 26 (US time), an Apple spokesperson gave MacRumors, CNBC and other outlets a statement that included these lines:

"We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units." "If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement."

Korean outlets including Edaily and Aju News carried the same statement in Korean. MoneyToday adds that Apple said most units are unaffected and that defective units tend to show symptoms soon after purchase.

Headline vs. statement

Claim Status
Apple acknowledges an inner-display issue Confirmed (Apple statement)
Affected users get a replacement via AppleCare Confirmed (Apple statement)
Replacement is free for every affected unit Not stated by Apple. Korean headlines use "무상교체" (free replacement), but the article bodies we reviewed only repeat the AppleCare instruction. In-warranty replacement for a defect is normally free, but Apple has not published terms specific to this issue.
A formal "Service Program" with serial checker Not found. We found no program page on support.apple.com as of Oct 27, 2026.
Root cause Not disclosed by Apple. iFixit's hinge theory is unconfirmed.

Symptoms reported

These come from user reports collected by MacRumors, MoneyToday, Aju News and Digital Today. Apple has not published its own list.

  • A crack in the inner display along the central hinge, usually in the lower half
  • A bright line or row of lit pixels across one side of the fold
  • White patches on the screen
  • Touch problems
  • The hinge feeling stiff, or a popping or creaking sound when unfolding, just before the damage appears

Timing: reports describe damage appearing anywhere from a few hours to a few days after purchase. MacRumors cites an Australian owner whose screen cracked after fewer than 20 openings. Bloomberg, as cited by MoneyToday and Aju News, says it verified cases through photos and support records, including at least six owners it interviewed.

Unverified: some crack photos circulating online have been flagged as fake or AI-generated. Review units at Engadget and CNET reportedly had no problems.

Which units are affected

Apple has not released serial numbers, manufacturing dates, a batch range or a defect rate. It says only "a small number of units." No eligibility checker exists. In practice, any iPhone Duo showing these symptoms should be taken to Apple.

How to get a replacement

Channel What's reported
AppleCare / Apple Support This is the route Apple names in its statement
Apple Store Some owners got replacements in store right away, while others had to wait because of limited stock (MacRumors, Aju News)
Courier / mail-in MoneyToday reports some owners shipped their devices by courier because replacement stock was short
Apple Authorized Service Providers Not stated. Apple's statement does not mention AASPs for this issue

Practical steps:

  1. Back up the phone.
  2. Take photos and video of the damage and note when it first appeared.
  3. Contact Apple Support (online, by phone or through the Apple Support app) and describe it as the inner-display issue Apple has acknowledged.
  4. If the store has no stock, ask for a written repair or replacement case number.

Supply is the main obstacle. Aju News reports that the first online stock sold out within minutes and that new orders show delivery estimates in late January.

Korea-specific notes

  • Price: Aju News and MoneyToday report that the iPhone Duo starts at KRW 3.29 million in Korea.
  • Apple Korea: Korean reports say Apple Korea gave the same position on October 27. We did not find a separate Korea-only program or any different terms.
  • Warranty length: Aju News says the basic limited warranty is 2 years in Korea and 1 year in the US, and that the inner display has no separate warranty of its own.
  • Repair cost outside warranty: Aju News puts an inner-display repair at KRW 1,649,000 in Korea and US$999 in the US. Digital Today also cites the $999 US price.
  • "전량 무상교체": this phrase comes from the headlines (for example, Edaily's). As explained above, Apple's own wording is narrower.

Deadlines

None announced. Apple has not set an end date or a coverage period beyond the standard warranty. Past Apple display programs, such as the iPhone 11 touch program in 2020, had fixed coverage windows, but nothing like that has been published for the iPhone Duo. Don't wait for one.

What Apple did NOT say

  • What causes the problem. iFixit's teardown suggests the central support bar under the display may not retract properly and could concentrate stress at the fold. This is iFixit's theory and Apple has not commented on it.
  • How many units are affected, or the failure rate
  • Which serials or production dates are affected
  • Whether replacement units have a design or manufacturing change
  • Whether a firmware or hardware fix is planned
  • Whether replacements are explicitly free in all cases, including for units with other damage
  • Any end date, mail-in process or role for AASPs

Context

IDC's Francisco Jeronimo, as quoted in Korean coverage, called Apple's quick replacement response a reasonable first step. He also compared it to the screen problems on Samsung's first Galaxy Fold in 2019. Separately, Apple's published AppleCare+ pricing includes a $19 fee to replace the inner screen's removable cover layer (reported by Tom's Guide and MacTrast before launch). That is an unrelated service and not a fix for this defect.

Why it blew up in Korea: ITSub's Instagram story

On October 26–27, a post titled "광기 그 자체인 잇섭 인스타 스토리" ("ITSub's Instagram story, pure madness") reached FMKorea's best board. According to Topstar News, ITSub's story shared a community comment that mocked him for criticizing Galaxy phones over a 10–20 g weight gain while going easy on the roughly 50 g heavier iPhone Duo. He wrote that he never said that, warned he would no longer tolerate false claims, and said many of the attacking accounts appeared to be very young users who had not watched his video. The night before, he had streamed about three hours of scratch tests and a teardown focused on the Duo's display crack issue. He said the teardown had been planned before the backlash.

The fan-war around it doesn't matter much. What it pushed into view does: a real, acknowledged defect in a product that costs about ₩3.29 million.

Why the hinge is the prime suspect (unconfirmed)

ZDNet Korea's supply-chain reporting points to the hinge, not the panel, as the weak link:

  • Amphenol (US) was the original first-tier hinge supplier, but its yields reportedly fell well short of expectations.
  • Shin Zu Shing (Taiwan), originally the second supplier, moved up to first supplier. It reportedly also struggled, at times delivering Apple-approved "golden sample" units one at a time.
  • Industry sources expect Apple to redesign the hinge, possibly with fewer parts. This is analyst expectation, not an Apple announcement.

There is also a crowding problem. Apple reportedly gave suppliers a forecast of about 6 million units by year-end, and ZDNet notes possible supply tightness in high-end glass-fiber board materials (Nitto Boseki's "T-glass") as AI chips take priority.

For comparison, ZDNet notes that Samsung's foldables launched in Q3 2026 have had no major reported issues. Samsung Display supplies panels to both companies, which is another reason attention has shifted to Apple's hinge mechanics.

FAQ

Is the replacement free? Apple hasn't said "free" in its statement. It says to contact AppleCare for a replacement. A manufacturing defect within the standard warranty (2 years in Korea, according to Aju News) would normally be repaired at no charge, but Apple hasn't published terms for this specific issue.

Can I check whether my serial number is affected? No. There is no serial checker and no list of affected batches. Only phones that actually show symptoms appear to qualify.

My screen is fine. Should I do anything? Apple says defective units tend to show symptoms early. Watch for stiffness, popping sounds or a line at the fold. Keep your receipt and keep the phone backed up.

Is there a deadline? None has been announced. Because replacement stock is short, it's better to report a problem as soon as you see it.
