RTX Remix 1.6 DLSS 5 Modding Guide: Install, Alt+X Setup, 6X Frame Gen
RTX Remix 1.6 (Oct 23, 2026) adds DLSS 5 and 5X/6X frame gen. Install the runtime, enable DLSS 5 via Alt+X, driver 616.92+, compatible games and fixes.
TL;DR: NVIDIA released RTX Remix 1.6 on October 23, 2026 (GitHub tag
remix-1.6.1, also in the NVIDIA App). It adds DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering (Models A/B/C, highlight and volumetric tuning, per-material masks), 5X and 6X Multi Frame Generation, the beta Frame Generation Performance Mode (Preset C), sparse rendering and Windows on ARM builds. The minimum driver is now 616.92 (a WHQL Game Ready driver from September 9, 2026). To turn DLSS 5 on: install the 1.6 runtime next to a Remix-compatible game's EXE, launch, press Alt+X, open Developer Settings Menu, enable DLSS 5. DLSS 5 and 3X–6X MFG need a GeForce RTX 50 GPU right now.
RTX Remix is NVIDIA's free modding platform for remastering old DirectX 8/9 fixed-function games with path tracing. Version 1.6 is the first official way to put DLSS 5 into games whose developers never shipped it. This guide covers what to download, where the files go, which toggles to flip, and what to check when it doesn't work.
What's new in RTX Remix 1.6 (the parts that matter for players and modders)
From NVIDIA's RTX Remix 1.6 release notes and the GitHub release:
- DLSS 5 integration: "Integrated DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering and added live artistic controls in the Toolkit." The Toolkit gets global controls (Model A/B/C, highlight and volumetric tuning) in Render Settings and Preferences, plus per-material control masks.
- Faster DLSS 5 model: NVIDIA said on October 13 that the DLSS 5 update for Remix would launch October 23 alongside a 2X-faster 3D-Guided Neural Rendering model (NVIDIA). We covered that model update in DLSS 5 October update: faster model, Hogwarts Legacy, RTX 40.
- Up to 6X Multi Frame Generation: "Added 5× and 6× frame-generation choices on supported hardware."
- Frame Generation Performance Mode: the beta Preset C model is integrated. Our Preset C vs Preset B explainer covers the trade-off.
- Sparse rendering with DLSS Ray Reconstruction and a sampling-rate slider (performance vs image quality).
- Driver baseline raised to 616.92, and unsupported legacy DLSS CNN presets were removed.
- Windows on ARM runtime (ARM64/ARM64EC), with day-one support for Portal RTX, the Half-Life 2 RTX demo and the Minecraft beta.
- AMD: TraceRay is now the default on AMD Windows drivers (about 20% faster in community measurements, 53 to 63 FPS on AMD driver 26.6.4).
- Toolkit: ComfyUI 2.0 replaces the old AI tools; the MCP server moved to Streamable HTTP at
http://127.0.0.1:18014/mcp(breaking change for existing MCP clients).

Step 1: Update your NVIDIA driver to 616.92 or newer
Open the NVIDIA App → Drivers and install the latest Game Ready driver, or download it from nvidia.com/drivers. 616.92 is the floor; anything newer works, including 621.01, the October 21 Game Ready driver we used in our Cyberpunk 2077 DLSS 4.5 guide.
Check your current version: right-click the desktop → NVIDIA Control Panel → System Information, or open the NVIDIA App → Drivers. Remix 1.6 now shows an explicit "incompatible NVIDIA driver" message instead of failing silently, per the release notes.
Step 2: Install the RTX Remix 1.6 Toolkit (for modders)
Skip this step if you only want to play an existing Remix mod. Skip to Step 3.
Option A: NVIDIA App (recommended)
- Open the NVIDIA App → Home.
- Find RTX Remix and click Install (or Update if you have 1.5).
- Launch it from the NVIDIA App.
Option B: GitHub development package (newer, potentially unstable)
- Sign in to GitHub and open the Download RTX Remix Toolkit Package runs linked from NVIDIA's install guide.
- Pick the newest green run with an artifact named
rtx_remix@...+main...windows-x86_64.releaseand download it. - Extract to a short path such as
C:\rtx_remix(long paths hit Windows' path limit). - Optional: run
install.batonce, then startlightspeed.app.trex.bat.
The Toolkit already bundles a matching runtime at <INSTALL_DIRECTORY>\deps\remix_runtime\runtime (NVIDIA install guide).
Step 3: Install the Remix 1.6 runtime into the game folder
- Check whether the game is 32-bit or 64-bit. Run the game, open Task Manager → Details, right-click a column header → Select columns → enable Platform. Most D3D9 games are 32-bit.
- Download the right zip from the remix-1.6.1 GitHub release:
- 32-bit game:
rtx-remix-for-x86-games-release-remix-1.6.1.zip - 64-bit game:
rtx-remix-for-x64-games-release-remix-1.6.1.zip - (The
-debugand-debugoptimizedbuilds are for troubleshooting, not playing.)
- 32-bit game:
- Copy everything into the folder that holds the game's main EXE.
- 32-bit:
d3d9.dllplus the.trex\and.trex_arm64\folders sit next to the EXE. - 64-bit:
d3d9.dll,d3d9_x64.dll,d3d9_a64ec.dlland the other files sit next to the EXE.
- 32-bit:
- Source Engine exception: these games load
d3d9.dllfrom thebinfolder, not the EXE folder (NVIDIA runtime guide). - Start the game. A banner reading "Welcome to RTX Remix…" with hotkey info confirms the runtime loaded.
Updating an existing mod from 1.5: replace the old d3d9.dll and .trex folder with the 1.6.1 files, and keep the mod's own rtx-remix\mods folder and rtx.conf. Back up the folder first, the same way we recommend in our DLL restore guide.
Step 4: Enable DLSS 5 with Alt+X
NVIDIA's own instructions (NVIDIA, Oct 13): "press Alt + X on your keyboard to launch the NVIDIA RTX Remix Runtime User Guide overlay, and click on the Developer Settings Menu option inside the interface. Then, enable DLSS 5 in the runtime or toolkit menu."
- In game, press Alt+X. The User Graphics Settings menu opens.
- Click Developer Settings Menu. (Tick Always Developer Menu if you'll be toggling a lot.)
- Enable DLSS 5 / 3D-Guided Neural Rendering in the runtime's rendering settings.
- Pick a model (A, B or C). NVIDIA hasn't published a plain-English "A = subtle, C = strong" description, so flip between them in the same scene and compare.
- Adjust highlight and volumetric tuning if the effect overbrightens specular highlights or fog.
- Your choices save to
rtx.confnext to the EXE, so they survive a restart.
In the Toolkit (modders): the same global controls live in Render Settings and Preferences. Per-material masks let you include or exclude content from DLSS 5 and pick a preset per object. NVIDIA's example: apply the effect to armour and skin while leaving a wall alone. Modders "have access to the same controls as developers," per NVIDIA. Ship your tuned settings in the mod so players don't have to re-tune.
What DLSS 5 changes: it doesn't upscale. It uses the rendered frame plus engine data (geometry, textures, lighting buffers) to enhance lighting and material response. NVIDIA's showcase projects are Fallout 4 RTX (Sparkles/Kim2091: helmet reflections, neck shadowing, cloth detail) and Mirror's Edge RTX (SoftSoundd: contact shadows, AO, lighting). Both are still in development (tbreak).
Step 5: Turn on 5X/6X Multi Frame Generation and Preset C
- In the same Alt+X menu (graphics settings), find DLSS Frame Generation.
- Pick the multiplier: 2X on RTX 40; up to 6X on RTX 50. At 6X, DLSS generates five frames for every rendered one.
- Optional: switch Frame Generation to Performance Mode (Preset C, beta). NVIDIA quotes up to 35% faster frame generation on an RTX 5060 for this mode in general, not measured in Remix (NVIDIA).
- Keep Reflex on. Higher multipliers add smoothness, not responsiveness.
Rule of thumb: pick the multiplier so that base FPS × multiplier ≈ your monitor's refresh rate. A 240 Hz screen with a 60 FPS path-traced base suits 4X; 5X/6X make sense at 240–360 Hz or with a low base. Want the multiplier to adjust itself in regular games? See our Dynamic MFG guide.
Which games work, and which don't
Works (or officially supported):
- Portal RTX, Half-Life 2 RTX demo (day-one ARM support too), and RTX Remix for Minecraft (beta): Java 1.21.1 via Fabric, PBR resource pack, BlockWorks demo map (GitHub).
- Community DirectX 8/9 fixed-function titles listed in the ModDB RTX Remix compatibility table, which also hosts ready-made
rtx.conffiles. - DLSS 5 showcase mods: Fallout 4 RTX and Mirror's Edge RTX (in development, not general releases).
Doesn't work:
- Modern shader-based games (most DX9.0c titles, everything DX10/11/12). Remix can't rebuild the scene. NVIDIA: "Games released after 2010 are generally not compatible unless they've been modified."
- OpenGL / DirectX 7 and older without a wrapper that translates to fixed-function DX9.
- Mixed games: only the fixed-function parts get remastered.
- Online games with anti-cheat: swapping
d3d9.dllcan be flagged. Same reasoning as in our OptiScaler and anti-cheat guide.
Don't confuse this with DLSS 5 in commercial games (NBA 2K27, Hogwarts Legacy from November 5). Those are enabled in-game, with no Remix involved. See our DLSS 5 supported games list. RTX 40 owners: there's still no official DLSS 5 path. Details in our RTX 40 status post.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| No "Welcome to RTX Remix" banner | Wrong folder (check Source Engine bin), or wrong bitness: x86 package for 32-bit games, x64 for 64-bit. |
| "Incompatible driver" error on launch | Update to 616.92 or newer; reboot. |
| DLSS 5 toggle missing or greyed out | You're on RTX 20/30/40. DLSS 5 is RTX 50-only in 1.6. Also confirm you're on runtime 1.6.1, not an older bundled one. |
| 5X/6X not offered | RTX 50 only; RTX 40 tops out at 2X. |
Old DLSS preset in rtx.conf now ignored |
1.6 removed unsupported legacy DLSS CNN presets. Pick a current preset in Alt+X. |
| Translucent/thin materials look brighter after updating | 1.6 corrected Thin Opaque subsurface backlighting. NVIDIA says existing materials may need retuning. |
| MCP/agent tools stopped connecting | Point clients at http://127.0.0.1:18014/mcp (Streamable HTTP), not the old SSE :8000/sse. |
| UI renders path-traced or broken | Alt+X → Developer Settings → Game Setup → tag UI textures, or grab the game's rtx.conf from ModDB. |
| Low FPS on AMD | 1.6 already defaults to TraceRay on AMD; update the AMD driver. DLSS features themselves need NVIDIA. |
| Crash on 1.6.1 | Report it on GitHub Issues with the debug build's logs; 1.6 now auto-captures NVIDIA Aftermath GPU crash data. |
Caution: back up the game folder before dropping in d3d9.dll. Deleting the Remix files restores the original renderer.
FAQ
Can I add DLSS 5 to any old game now? No. The game must be Remix-compatible first. Then you enable DLSS 5 through the Remix runtime or Toolkit.
