RTX 5080 Discontinued? The 24GB "5080 SUPER" Rumor: What Is Confirmed (2026)

RTX 5080 16GB pulled from NVIDIA's US store, prices near $2,000, and a rumored 24GB replacement. Confirmed facts, rumor timeline, specs and buy-or-wait advice.

TL;DR: NVIDIA has not officially discontinued the RTX 5080 16GB. What is confirmed: it vanished from NVIDIA's US Marketplace on Oct 30, 2026, and the cheapest US cards now cost about $1,980–$2,200 against a $999 MSRP. What is rumored: a 24GB RTX 5080 (maybe sold as the 5080 SUPER) with the same 10,752 CUDA cores will replace it. The rumored launch window has moved from Q1 2027 to "December–January", and on Nov 2 the reports said January now looks unlikely. If you need a card now, you are paying a shortage price. If you can wait, watch for CES 2027 (Jan 6–9).

What is confirmed vs what is rumored

Confirmed (NVIDIA statements, NVIDIA's store, retailer listings):

  • The RTX 5080 launched in January 2025 at $999. NVIDIA's spec page lists 10,752 CUDA cores, a 2.62 GHz boost clock, 16GB GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus, 360W total graphics power and an 850W recommended PSU.
  • Oct 30, 2026: the RTX 5080 dropped out of NVIDIA's US Marketplace, where the GPU filter now stops at the RTX 5070 Ti. VideoCardz, Tom's Hardware and TechPowerUp all reported this. TechPowerUp noted that the UK Marketplace still showed 13 RTX 5080 listings.
  • Oct 16, 2026: NVIDIA SVP Jeff Fisher told 4Gamers that the RTX 5090 has not been discontinued and will keep shipping, though supply is constrained. NVIDIA has not made a matching public statement about the RTX 5080.
  • US street prices have roughly doubled. On Oct 28, VideoCardz found the cheapest RTX 5080 at $1,979.99 (Micro Center, pickup only) and the cheapest online at $1,999.99 (Best Buy). On Oct 30, Tom's Hardware's cheapest in-stock card was $2,199.99.

Rumored (leakers, Board Channels, BenchLife; NVIDIA has confirmed none of it):

  • That the RTX 5080 16GB is being discontinued or reaching end of life.
  • That a 24GB replacement exists, plus its specs, name, price and launch date.
  • China-specific supply changes, such as ending 16GB GPU supply and the RTX 5090 D V2.

A store listing disappearing is not proof of discontinuation. NVIDIA's own Marketplace removal of the RTX 5090 came two weeks before NVIDIA said the 5090 is still shipping.

Bar chart: RTX 5080 16GB (NVIDIA spec: 16GB, 960 GB/s, 360W) vs rumored 24GB (24GB, 1,024 GB/s, 415W)

If the leaks are right, this is a memory upgrade and not a faster GPU. Core count stays the same, and bandwidth rises only about 6%. The extra 8GB matters most for 4K with path tracing, heavy texture mods, frame generation at high resolutions, and local AI models that don't fit in 16GB. In games that already fit in 16GB, expect small gains that come mostly from any clock or power increase.

Bar chart of lowest US RTX 5080 prices: $999 MSRP, about $1,200 late Aug 2026, $1,979.99 Oct 28, $2,199.99 Oct 30

At $1,979.99, the cheapest card was 98% above MSRP on Oct 28, according to VideoCardz. By Oct 30, Tom's Hardware's cheapest in-stock card was 2.2× MSRP. Prices are rising in China and Korea too. VideoCardz (Oct 23) reported that ASUS and then Gigabyte raised RTX 5080 prices in China.

Why this is happening: GDDR7 and AI demand

  • Memory cost. In July, VideoCardz's partner source said 3GB GDDR7 chips cost $60–70 each vs about $20 for 2GB chips. The RTX 50 SUPER cards were put on hold for that reason. A 24GB card needs eight 3GB chips, so the memory bill rises sharply.
  • Memory supply. Wccftech reports that SK Hynix, Samsung and Micron warn tight DRAM supply could last until 2030. VideoCardz (Oct 29) reported global GPU prices up 35% in three months.
  • Silicon priorities. BenchLife reports that GB202 dies once used for the RTX 5090 family are going to RTX PRO workstation cards. The China reports say 5080 16G GPU inventory has already been cleared.
  • Why a 24GB card instead of the 16GB one. This is analysis, not something NVIDIA has said. If memory is scarce either way, a 24GB card can justify a much higher price than a 16GB card on the same die. The ¥19,999 China figure fits that.

Should you buy now or wait?

Buy now if you need a card this month and you find an RTX 5080 close to $2,000 or less from a real retailer. Prices have been rising week to week, not falling. Nothing in the reports suggests the 24GB model will be cheap. Board Channels' China figure is around ¥19,999.

Wait if your current GPU still works, especially if you want more VRAM for 4K or local AI. The 24GB card could appear at CES 2027 (Jan 6–9), but a January retail launch is now doubtful. A partner told VideoCardz that boards need at least six weeks after design kits arrive.

Price signals to watch:

  1. Whether the RTX 5080 returns to NVIDIA's US Marketplace or the UK listings disappear.
  2. The cheapest RTX 5080 at Micro Center and Best Buy: under $1,979.99 means easing, above $2,199.99 means still tightening.
  3. Any NVIDIA statement on the 5080 like the one it gave about the 5090.
  4. Reports that AICs have received 24GB design kits. That would put a launch roughly six weeks out.
  5. Black Friday "discounts" measured against inflated base prices.

  • RTX 5070 Ti: same 16GB and 256-bit bus as the 5080 with about 17% fewer cores. It is the value pick if you find it near the low end of NVIDIA's store range.
  • RTX 5090: NVIDIA says it is still shipping, but you will struggle to find stock and prices are about double MSRP or more. Only consider it if you need 32GB.
  • AMD RX 9070 XT: the cheapest 16GB option in both the US and Korean data. VideoCardz (Oct 30) reported that AMD may raise Radeon prices again in November, so don't count on it getting cheaper.
